The School of Allied Health Sciences, Lahore Better patient care is the ultimate goal of all health care activities and is provided by doctors, nurses and allied health care staff. Provision of health care is a team effort and the allied health worker is an integral part of the health care team, who, if not available, affects the quality of health care provision. The School of Allied Health Sciences has the honor of being the first institution in Punjab to start professional degree courses in different disciplines of Allied health Sciences. The School is conducting total 7 degree programs including 5 year degree program in Doctor of Physical Therapy, B.Sc. Medical Imaging Technology, Bsc. Medical Laboratory Technology courses, B.Sc. Dental Technology, B.Sc. Occupational Therapy, B.Sc. Speech & Language Pathology, and B.Sc. Operation Theater Technology. The aim of these programes is to equip the students with relevant professional knowledge, skills, techniques and ethical values to enable them to apply their acquired expertise at level between the doctors and the patient for efficient health service delivery. The School of Allied Health Sciences is located on the second floor of “The OPD Block” of Children’s Hospital & Institute of Child Health, Lahore. It has spacious air conditioned lecture rooms equipped with modern teaching aids like multimedia and over head projectors. The School has a fully equipped anatomy museum, computer lab and library. The students have full access to the main Library and Laboratories etc. of the Children’s Hospital. The faculty of the School comprises of highly trained professionals who are expert in their fields and are recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan for running graduate programmes. The School offers training in some of the world’s most modern equipment in Imaging Technology, Physiotherapy and diagnostics. The School of Allied Health Sciences has provided an opportunity to develop human resources and to produce the scientists for the future in relative disciplines of Allied Health Sciences. The graduates will be an asset to the country and will help in improving the quality of health care in Pakistan. B.Sc. (Hons.) Medical Imaging Technology
SAHS offers a four-year full-time B.Sc. (Hons.) degree program in Medical Imaging Technology. This programme combines clinical applications with training in the underlying science and technology of image formation in several diagnostic techniques; it combines the key themes of, understanding how medical images are formed and appreciating what images reveal in the clinical context. The department of Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Cardiology is staffed by highly qualified Consultants, Technologists and Paramedical staff. Every member in the department is highly motivated to the patient care. The Radiology department comprises of the facilities of Digital Radiography, Fluoroscopy with conventional and specialized contrast studies, Gray scale & Color Doppler Ultrasonography, Siemens’ Multislice volume zoom Computed Tomography, Philips 1.5 T superconducting MRI system and the Cardiology is equipped with latest state of art flat pane angiography system, color Doppler echocardiography including routine 3D option ETT machine Hotler monitor and routine ECG machine. We are affiliated with Inmol Hospital for training in Nuclear Medicine.
B.Sc. (Hons.) MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY
SAHS offers a four-year full time B.Sc. (Hons.) degree programme in Medical Laboratory Technology. Medical Laboratory Technologists perform chemical or visual analysis of specimens taken from body fluids to identify, quantify, verify, and report the presence or absence of chemicals, micro-organisms, proteins, other substances, and the description of cellular elements, in both the clinical laboratory and the industrial sector. The purpose of this course is producing lab technologists to meet the requirements of professionals in this field. The Children’s Hospital has a well established and organized pathology department with a dedicated, skilled and highly trained staff including specialist consultants, medical officers, lab technologist and technicians. The sub-departments of pathology include Histopathology, Microbiology, Hematology, Chemical Pathology and Immunology Department. These departments are fully equipped with highly sophisticated latest equipments and machines.
B.Sc. (Hons.) DENTAL TECHNOLOTY
SAHS offers a four-year full time B.Sc. (Hons.) degree programme in Dental Technology. The purpose of Dental Technology is to understand the major oral health problems of a community and to describe the role of a dental technician in health care settings. They recommend and design the dental structures and the dental accessories for a patient and demonstrating the acquisition or update of dental health knowledge and skills relevant to their dental practice. Dental department is rendering all types of services to the general public. It includes general dentistry, orthodontics, cleft centre, surgery and community dentistry. In general dentistry they are providing all types of management including fillings, scaling, extraction, root canal treatments and etc. In orthodontics patients are being treated for malaligned teeth as well as interceptive orthodontics. This is also a centre for cleft patients which are being treated in collaboration with other departments.
B.Sc. (Hons.) OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
SAHS offers a four-year full time B.Sc. (Hons.) degree programme in Occupational Therapy. The aim of an occupational therapist is to maximize an individual’s independence in every day activities, such as feeding, dressing, toileting, play and writing essay online free. An Occupational therapist deals with patients having Fine Motor and Neuro-developmental problems i.e. Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Balance & Posture problems etc.They pay particular attention to hand and eye co¬ordination perception and manipulative skills and how to develop these in order that the child reaches its full potential. It is a great honor and pride for the School of Allied Health Sciences at The Children Hospital and Institute of Child Health Lahore to hold this course for the first time in Punjab under the auspicious affiliation of The University of Health Sciences, Lahore. Occupational Therapy is an integral part of Developmental Paediatrics Services. Developmental Paediatrics is a branch of Paediatrics, which deals with assessment and monitoring of growth and developmental functioning of normal and disabled (special children).
B.Sc. (Hons.) SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY
SAHS offers a four-year full time B.Sc. (Hons.) degree programme in Speech and Language Pathology. It deals with the assessment, and management of different speech, language and communication disorders like speech delays, articulation problems, stammering speech, voice disorders, aphasia, dysphasia, and hearing impairment. Speech and Language pathologist is an important team member in dealing with patients having developmental delays, feeding and swallowing difficulties, cleft palates, stroke patients and laryngectomised patients. It is a great honor and pride for the School of Allied Health Sciences at The Children Hospital and Institute of Child Health Lahore to hold this course for the first time in the history of Pakistan under the auspicious affiliation of The University of Health Sciences, Lahore. Speech and language Pathology is an integral part of Developmental Pediatrics Services. B.Sc. (Hons.) Operation Theatre Technology
The aim of the 4 years degree program in Operation Theatre Technology is to equip the students with relevant professional knowledge, skills, techniques and ethical values to enable them to apply their acquired expertise at level between the doctors and the patient for efficient health service delivery. Operation Theater Technologists provide high standards of patient care and skilled support alongside medical and nursing colleagues during the anesthetic, surgical and recovery phases of peri-operative period. The OTT’s role involves the application of theory to practice in a variety of clinical settings. The OTT is, therefore, required to have a broad knowledge and skill base, in addition to management and communication skills. The students will be involved with the assessment, implementation and evaluation of peri-operative care which can be divided into three interconnected phases. These phases being the anesthetic phase, the surgical phase and the recovery phase. The Children’s Hospital is also a center of excellence in Pediatric Surgery. The department is headed by Professor of Pediatric surgery along with a competent team of surgeons. Almost all allied surgical departments are fully functional at the hospital. The allied specialties of Surgical Faculty like orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, cardiothoracic surgery all are headed by competent surgeons in their fields. The anesthesia team is one of the mainstream of our surgical team without them nothing would have been possible. The Hospital has fully equipped recovery Units with the complete patient recovery equipment needed for a patient for its post operative recovery prior to shifting to wards.
