The department strives to provide Modern Pharmaceutical Services to masses through CH & ICH. The core objective is to make the best use of medication and maximize the treatment outcome to improve patients Quality Of Life.
The Pharmacies performing different functions are the following:
Central Pharmacy:

- Disposables Store
- SEMS Store: Ensures 24-hour supply of all medicine in A & E pharmacy and provision of Emergency Trolley medication to all patients in wards.
Inpatient Pharmacy:
To ensure supply of medicines & disposables to wards & ICUs.
Accident & Emergency Pharmacy:

OPD Pharmacy

Skin Pharmacy:
Involved in Extemporaneous compounding & dispensing of some essential skin preparations.
Government Model Pharmacy:
One of the major achievements of Department of Pharmaceutical Services is establishment of one of the Pakistan’s first government owned retail pharmacy. This Govt. Model Pharmacy has been started and is being run with absolutely no funding from the government providing quality pharmaceuticals to patient at subsidized rates working on no profit no loss basis.

A Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee has been established that comprises of all Department heads, Assistant & Associate Professors, Pharmacists and the administration. This committee actively participates in different Issues regarding provision of
quality pharmaceutical care to patients.
Inventory Management is carried out for availability of life saving and essential drugs as per hospital formulary, Development of Hospital Formulary through Pharmacy And Therapeutic Committee is done comprising of 250-300 essential medicines of pediatric use.
A Drug Information Center is established providing unbiased information about medicine to health professionals, patients and care providers.
The department is extensively involved in academic and developmental activities entertaining graduate and under graduate pharmacy students from all over Pakistan under a scheduled apprenticeship program. Formulation of different policies like Antibiotic policy, I/V admixtures and Disinfections Policies etc in collaboration with other departments is also done through Pharmacy &Therapeutic Committee.
Special Clinical Services
Aseptic Dispensing services:
The Aseptic Dispensing Unit in Children’s Hospital was started in June, 2003. The services provided by this unit are the following:
1. Total Parenteral Nutrition(TPN) Service:
This service is being provided to the neonatology unit (Medical neonatal ICU, Surgical Neonatal ICU, Neonatal Nursery Unit) & the Surgical ICUs. The clinical pharmacist visits wards to take clinical calls including those for Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). This service includes receiving of TPN call against which prescribed protocol is followed for planning, prescribing, calculation and preparation. TPN solution is prepared under Laminar Flow Hood using strict aseptic conditions by the trained pharmacy personnel. It is dispensed to ward in well labeled container with proper nursing and prescribing instructions. These patients are then followed for further plans and monitoring.
2. Preparation of Amphotericin-B Infusion:
Calls for preparation of Amphotericin-B Infusions are received by the Pharmacist, calculated & orders are sent for preparation of infusions in the aseptic area, according to the individualized requirements of patients.
Extemporaneous Dispensing Services:
Extemporaneous Compounding & dispensing is carried out through our Dispensing Unit that was started in the central pharmacy, has been recently shifted to the Hospital’s Diagnostic Block.
This unit is primarily providing preparations that are required in cases of metabolic disorders for example:
- Sodium Benzoate Solution
- Jouli’s Solution
- Shohl’s Solution
- Hydrosol, Eusol Solution
- Zinc Sulphate Sachets
- Tablets Dilution Service:
- Oral Morphine & Paracetamol suspension
- Skin Pharmacy
for Urea cycle defect and Hyperammonemia
for Hypophosphatemial Rickets
(Polycitra, Polycitra-K, and Bicitra) for renal tubular acidosis
Other Preparations include:
used for wet dressings
used in patients with zinc deficiency presenting with chronic diarrhea & other symptoms of malnutrition and patients with Wilsons disease.
Solid Dosage forms (tablets & Capsules) of potent drugs like digoxin, Sildenafil, Indomethacin, Spiromide etc.
are crushed & diluted with a compatible diluent using geometric mixing technique in order to ensure dosage accuracy in case of minute strengths of these drugs specifically required for Paediatric Cardiology Unit.
is a small scale-manufacturing unit situated in Skin OPD which dispenses different skin preparations like ointments creams and different emollients.
Future Plans
- Establishment of Oncology Pharmacy.
- Aseptic Handling Unit for TPN & other aseptic services like antibiotic reconstitution services and Intravenous Fluid preparation for Nurseries, Aseptic unit Dose Dispensing.
- 24 hours Clinical Pharmacy Services for the Accident And Emergency wards
- Extension of Drug Information Center so that this service can be provided through a 24 hrs toll free line not only to health professionals within the hospital but also to the people from outside the hospital.
- Extension of Poison Control Service through round the clock toll free access lines
- Initiating Pharm.D (Doctor of Pharmacy), a clinical degree in Pharmacy in the near future
- To start Post-Graduate Diplomas in Clinical Pharmacy, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Pharmacotherapy and Onco-Pharmacy.
