DEPARTMENT OF NEPHROLOGY
INTRODUCTION
Paediatric Nephrology unit at the Children’s Hospital & ICH started functioning in 1998, staffed by health care personnel dedicated to Child Nephrology. It flourished from a 5 bedded ward to 14 bedded ward with separate Haemodialysis and CAPD units catering patients 475 in 2000 to approximately 1700 in 2009 & this load is increasing day by day. Like other disciplines of the hospital it is officially twined with York Hill Hospital Glasgow, UK and this has made important contribution towards teaching and training of our staff and Pediatricians from different corners of the Punjab.
The department strives to provide quality care to the kidney patients of the country. Our services include both in-patient consultation with full service Haemodialysis, acute and chronic peritoneal dialysis, percutaneous renal biopsies and nutritional advice. Worth mentioning is the backup provided by pathology, urology, radiology, psychology & social welfare departments.
We pride ourselves on the academic training we provide and on our active participation in research and publications.

FUNCTIONING OF DEPARTMENT
The department strives to provide quality care to the kidney patients of the country. Our services include both in-hospital and out-patient consultation with full services in-patient and out-patient dialysis. Our faculty has varied areas of academic focus and expertise that collectively allow us to provide care for unusual diseases and complicated patients as only an academic center can.
The main bulk of admissions is from emergency
and OPD. In emergency patients are initially stabilized and then transferred to the Nephrology department where they are reassessed by the doctors on duty. Daily clinical rounds are made by consultants and patients are counseled at least once a day by the attending doctor.
Teaching Activities
We also pride ourselves on our dedication to education on all levels of medical curriculum, teaching residents / fellows and medical students. The Nephrology training we provide is an intensive clinical experience that includes all facets of nephrology practice.
We have designed a
program intended to meet the goals outlined below:
- A fundamental understanding of renal physiology and pathophysiology.
- Expertise in the application of renal therapeutic procedures like haemodialysis, insertion of haemodialysis catheter, peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialytic technique.
- Skills in the performance of renal biopsies.
- Exposure to and guidance in the car of children with a broad range of clinical disorder of renal function like chronic renal failure, nephrotic syndrome, tubular defects, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, acid base disturbances, hypertension and the full range of internal medicine problems affecting these patients.
- Knowledge of advantages and disadvantages of different modalities of renal replacement therapy, complications and appropriate utilization of each.
- To establish a critical and logical approach to problem solving and to the evaluation of new information by providing a supervised experiences in laboratory investigation and or resolution of a clinical problem.
The department’s commitment to education is manifest by a full menu of educational offerings. Regularly scheduled programs include daily teaching ward rounds, weekly morbidity and mortality conference and quarterly clinic-pathological conferences, seminars and journal clubs.
